The elementary school is strong and the schools after it are average: Porters Neck Elementary earned a B from the state for 2024-25, while Holly Shelter Middle and Laney High, the schools most Porters Neck addresses are assigned to, both earned a C. The more important point for a buyer is that the assignment is not the same across the whole area, so you need to check the exact address before you decide.
Families relocating to Wilmington ask us about Porters Neck more than almost any other address north of town, and schools are usually the first question. It is a fair one. Porters Neck is where a lot of our out-of-state buyers end up looking, the homes are not cheap, and nobody wants to pay for a school district they turn out not to be in.
So here is the honest version, with the state’s own numbers next to it. The elementary assignment is genuinely good. The middle and high school assignment is middle of the pack for New Hanover County, and the middle school is not in Porters Neck at all. None of that should scare you off. But you should know what you are signing up for before you fall in love with a house on Edgewater Club Road.
Which schools is Porters Neck actually assigned to?
We ran four points through the New Hanover County Schools attendance zone lookup on October 26, 2026. Addresses inside Porters Neck Plantation, along Edgewater Club Road, and out on Bald Eagle Lane all return the same three schools: Porters Neck Elementary, Holly Shelter Middle and Laney High.
Move west toward the US 17 interchange, still an address people call Porters Neck, and the answer changes. That area returns Ogden Elementary and Noble Middle, with Laney High staying the same. So two houses a few minutes apart, both marketed as Porters Neck, can send children to different elementary and middle schools. This is the single most common surprise we see with buyers in this part of the county.
It is also why our own neighborhood guide is worth reading alongside the district map rather than instead of it. If you are weighing the area generally, start with our Porters Neck neighborhood guide, then verify the assignment for the specific address with the district.

What a C actually means in North Carolina
North Carolina builds its school performance grade from two pieces, weighted 80 percent on achievement and 20 percent on growth, and the letter scale runs A for 85 to 100, B for 70 to 84, C for 55 to 69, D for 40 to 54 and F below 40 (NC Department of Public Instruction, 2024-25 accountability release, September 2025). Because achievement carries four fifths of the weight, a school full of children who arrived behind and gained a year and a half can still land a C.
That is close to what the numbers show here. Holly Shelter Middle met its growth target at 78.3 while carrying a C on achievement. Noble Middle scored two points higher overall at 63 but missed growth at 54.0. If you care about how much a school moves a child from where that child started, the middle school Porters Neck Plantation is assigned to is doing the better job of the two, even though both carry the same letter.
Laney High is the part most buyers do not expect. It came in at a C with a score of 62 and missed its growth target at 50.0. Laney is a large school with a long list of course offerings, and plenty of Porters Neck families are happy there. But if you have been told the area feeds a top high school, that is not what the state data says for 2024-25.
What the assignment means on a Tuesday morning
Porters Neck Elementary sits on Edgewater Club Road, inside the area, so the elementary years are a short drive. Holly Shelter Middle is at 3921 Roger Haynes Drive in Castle Hayne (Holly Shelter Middle School website, read October 26, 2026). That is inland, west of the US 17 and I-140 corridor, and it is a real bus ride rather than a neighborhood walk. Laney High is on Halyburton Memorial Parkway, south of the area off College Road.
Said plainly: in Porters Neck you get a neighborhood elementary school and then two schools your children commute to. Families we work with handle this fine, but it changes carpool math, after-school sports logistics and how early the bus comes. Ask us to drive the routes with you at 7:30 in the morning if it matters to your decision, because it looks different then than it does at noon on a Saturday.
The price side is worth knowing too. The median home price in the Porters Neck area is roughly $750,000 with an effective property tax rate near 0.45 percent (Tidal Realty Partners Porters Neck guide, data as of early 2026), against a $464,000 median for New Hanover County as a whole and 61 days on market countywide (Tidal Realty Partners New Hanover County market update, September 2026 data). You are paying a premium for the area. Make sure you know which part of it you are paying for.
Attendance boundaries are the one piece of this we cannot promise you. The zone data behind the district’s public map still carries field labels from earlier school years, the district redraws lines as new schools open and neighborhoods fill in, and the 2026-2027 Student Assignment Plan assigns students by domicile rather than by subdivision name. We treat our query as a strong indication, not a guarantee. If the assignment is the reason you are buying a particular house, verify it with New Hanover County Schools for that street address in writing before your due diligence period ends, and ask us to put the question in the contract timeline so it does not get missed. If the high school assignment is a deal breaker, tell us early. There are addresses in Wilmington assigned to Hoggard, and we would rather point you there than talk you into Porters Neck.
Related questions people also ask
Which high school is Porters Neck assigned to?
Every Porters Neck point we checked on the New Hanover County Schools attendance zone lookup in October 2026 returned Emsley A Laney High, including addresses inside Porters Neck Plantation and the areas closer to US 17. Laney is a large comprehensive high school south of the area off College Road. Because the district can redraw boundaries, confirm the assignment for the specific address with the district rather than relying on a listing description.
Can I apply to a school outside my assigned area in New Hanover County?
Yes, within limits. The district’s Student Assignment Plan for 2026-2027 assigns each student to a school based on domicile, and it also allows families to apply through a lottery for assignment to schools outside their assigned area, including specialty program and year-round schools. A lottery is not a guarantee, and transportation is not always provided, so plan your home search around the assigned school and treat the lottery as a bonus.
Do New Hanover County school assignments change?
They do. The district reassigns students when new schools open, when a school reaches capacity, or when growth shifts where children live, and northern New Hanover County has been one of the fastest growing parts of the county. That is why we tell buyers to verify the current assignment for a specific address at the time they are under contract, not from a guide or a listing written months earlier.
Pick the two or three streets you are actually considering, and verify the elementary, middle and high school assignment for each one with New Hanover County Schools before you write an offer. If you would rather not do that alone, send us the addresses and we will run them, drive the bus routes with you, and tell you honestly whether the school assignment matches what the listing implies. Schedule a consultation and we will talk it through.
